by the end of the night, we'll find out if it paid off. good evening, i'm erin kiernan... and i'm dan winters... thanks for joining us... whether a front runner seals the deal, or an underdog steals the show... tonight's races will come down to turnout. especially for the democrats... we start our coverage with hillary clinton and bernie sanders - who are in a statistical tie for the lead in iowa... jannay towne is with sanders tonight... but first, lets go to lynn melling who is following the clinton campaign... and lynn... lynn we're here on the drake university campus.. where the clinton camp is getting things ready for what they hope is a victory celebration later tonight. hillary clinton was up early this morning greeting caucus goers and handing out donuts to try to sweeten the deal. clinton has been on the campaign trail in iowa for months now.. always as the presumed democratic nominee.. but in recent weeks, bernie sanders has tighted up the race.. she's setting herself apart from him by saying she is a progressive who knows how to get things done. she says she's not over-promising.. and is ready to deliver results. presidential candidate "what people talk to me about is how i'm

set up is in full swing here at the cruz camp.... staff members have been setting up for his victory rally here at the state fairgrounds while cruz is busy making his last pitch to voters... cruz finished up his last event today in jefferson iowa encouraging voters to come out and caucus... it was the last stop of his full grassley tour--- grassley coined the name after traveling to all 99 counties and several politicians have followed his lead... for cruz visiting all of iowa's counties was a big priority... 25-41 to stand in front of the men and women in this state, to ask for your support, to make the case directly why we should stand together and to show the respect that i think any candidate who

we'll have more live coverage at six tonight... and as the caucuses start at seven, we'll begin streaming our coverage online at who tv dot com. at eight, we'll hit the airwaves as results start rolling in - on channel 13. after those votes come in all the candidates and national media will be trying to rush out of town.. they want to beat the major winter storm... dry for now but rain and snow will begin to fill in over central iowa late tonight. the heaviest snow looks to fall in the metro during the morning commute. northwest iowa will see heavy snow and strong winds throughout the day. the metro will see snow in the range of 3 to 6" and higher amounts of 8"+ will occur in northern iowa. a blizzard warning and winter storm warning will be in effect through the day on tuesday. just 34 votes separated the winner and the second place finisher in the 2012 republican caucus, which led to a late night for political junkies and journalists. mitt romney was originally declared the winner... but this year - there was - 16-days after the caucus rick santorum was declared the real winner. howard dean was the favorite to win the democratic caucus in 2004... but placed third... and then went on a rant that many say doomed the rest of deans campaign.

harkin gave dean what looked like a reluctant thumbs up... but dean withdrew from the race about a month and a half later. harkin himself ran for president in 1992... making him the hometown favorite in the democratic caucus, which diminished the appeal of the contest to other candidates. harkin easily clinched the caucus title... but bill clinton went on to win the whtiehouse. in 2008... a packed field of 11- candidates stumped in iowa. mike huckabee won the republican caucus by picking up votes from christian conservatives... and by picking up his guitar. but barack obama pulled out the upset... in part by harnessing the youth vote through social media. the list of caucus moments goes on and on... from signing babies...

who knows what moments the 20-16 caucus might bring. a blizzard warning is in effect for tuesday for those north and west of the des moines metro. moderate to heavy snow is expected at times and wind speeds will increase as well. winds will be strong from the north-northeast at 20 to 30 mph, gusts to 40 mph. this will create very difficult driving conditions all day on tuesday and for the start of wednesday. a winter storm warning is in effect for those southwest and southeast of des moines until tuesday night. tonight skies will be mostly cloudy with some areas of light rain showers developing. as temperatures drop down to the freezing mark by early morning, the rain will transition to snow. the snow will continue through the morning commute. this is when it will be heaviest in the des moines metro. heavy snow will continue in northwest iowa through the day on tuesday. totals will be in the 3 to 6"
